Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer petroleum ether extract was examined for its immunomodulatory properties in female B6C3F1 mice. After administraton of 5. 10 or 20 mg/kg of ginseng extract for 2 week, humoral-mediated immunity, cell-mediated immunity, nonspeific immunity and host-resistance were assayed. NK activity against YAC-1 target cells in spleen of ginseng 5 or 10 mg/kg treated mice were increased from 11% in control mice to 26 % at the 100 = 1 effector to target cell ratio. Ginseng extract 5 or 10mg/kg administration significantly increased Ig M PFC (p<0.05), but did not affect mitogenesis induced LPS. The lymphoproliferative responses of spleen cells to T-cell mitogen Con A and allogenic leukocytes were not affected by ginseng administration. Ginseng extract pretreatment decreased fatality to L. monocytogenes from 43.853.3% to 12.5-20% in mice previously given immunosuppressive doses of cyclophosphamide. These data suggest that Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer has some immunomodulatory properties, primarily associated with NK cell activity.
